Introduction / History

The Korapun Kimyal are a small subgroup of the broader Kimyal people living in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. Their communities are located in steep mountain valleys accessible primarily by footpaths or small airstrips. The Korapun Kimyal speak a local variety of the Kimyal language and maintain a distinct identity shaped by clan relationships, traditional customs, and close ties to ancestral land. Their history includes generations of subsistence living in rugged terrain, with cultural practices handed down orally from elders. Outside influence reached them only gradually through limited government presence and occasional contact with neighboring groups.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Daily life among the Korapun Kimyal centers on gardening, hunting, and caring for extended families. Men clear new garden plots, hunt wild pigs, and build shelters, while women tend sweet potatoes, greens, and other highland crops. Families live in small clusters of homes, often organized around clan ties, and community cooperation is essential for survival in the highlands.

Celebrations involve shared meals, traditional dances, and speeches by elders. Pigs play an important role in major ceremonies such as weddings, peacemaking events, and communal exchanges. Sweet potatoes remain their staple food, supplemented by leafy vegetables and occasional meat. Although younger adults are increasingly exposed to outside education and trade, many still return to their home valleys for festivals and important family gatherings.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Many Korapun Kimyal follow Christianity as introduced through mission efforts in the highlands. At the same time, elements of traditional belief—such as concerns about ancestral spirits, ritual practices, and sacred locations—still influence parts of community life. Some households actively participate in church life, while others maintain a mixture of Christian expressions and traditional understandings of the spiritual world. The Korapun Kimyal continue to need discipleship that helps them understand God's Word clearly and grow in wholehearted devotion to Christ.

What Are Their Needs?

The Korapun Kimyal face physical challenges related to healthcare access, safe childbirth, and limited infrastructure. Steep terrain and isolation make transportation, emergency care, and education difficult. Families often struggle with respiratory illnesses, malnutrition during poor harvests, and the lack of trained medical workers.

Spiritually, they need deeper grounding in biblical teaching so they can distinguish the gospel from traditional spirit practices. Local believers need encouragement, mentoring, and opportunities to grow as leaders in their own communities. They also need workers who will live among them long enough to build trust and model Christlike relationships.

Prayer Items

Pray for improved healthcare access, especially for children, mothers, and those living in remote hamlets.
Pray that the Korapun Kimyal will grow in a clear and undivided commitment to Jesus Christ.
Pray that God will raise up mature local leaders who can shepherd their own people with wisdom and humility.
Pray for workers who will encourage and disciple families, helping them understand God's word and live it out faithfully.
